Why we are building a record pool on-chain

The record pool is one of the oldest working institutions in DJ culture. Promoters, labels, and pool directors feed working selectors the music they need before it breaks. The model survived vinyl, CDs, and digital folders because the job never changed: get the right music into the right hands, and report back honestly.

The reporting part never really worked. Charts lived in spreadsheets, plays went uncounted, and artists got paid on goodwill. Every generation of pools fixed distribution and left accounting behind.

KOLATZ Media exists because music culture deserves writing that takes its time. The project starts quietly: a few long-form essays and portraits, published when they are ready, not when a calendar says so.

Formats are open. Music comes first, but photography, print projects, and documents of the culture around it all have a place. Submissions will open when the catalogue deserves them.

The difference between a good set and an unforgettable one is rarely the track selection alone. It is pacing — the way tension and release are distributed across hours, not minutes.

A sunset set has a shape: it starts conversations, builds a shared pulse, and never peaks too early. A wedding has a different shape — the first dance must land, the parents must stay, and the last hour belongs to the couple and their friends.

First-live flagship set

The brief: a launch night that felt like a scene, not a showcase. We built the concept, booked the room, set the run of show, and ran a campaign with one voice from poster to last call.

The room filled two weeks ahead of the date, and the night ran to the minute. The template from this project now shapes how we plan every flagship night.

Designing an audio library manager that respects your files

An audio library manager has one job: make a large collection of music quick to search, safe to edit, and pleasant to browse. Everything else is decoration.

We built Tracks local-first because a library is personal. Your files stay on your disk. Metadata edits are explicit and reversible. Playlists export in formats other tools understand, so your work is never trapped.

The result is a tool that behaves like a good record shop: you know where everything is, and digging is half the fun.

Mastering for the stream and the turntable at once

Every destination has its own physics. Streaming has loudness normalisation; vinyl has physics of a very literal kind. One master cannot be all things — but one session can produce all the masters you need.

We cut streaming masters with headroom, vinyl pre-masters with the low end consolidated and sibilance tamed, and alternates for club systems. The record keeps its voice; each format hears it correctly.

From voice memo to release day

A voice memo and a deadline. We developed the demo into a real arrangement, tracked the parts in-house, edited hard, and mixed in the room it was recorded in.

Mastered for streaming and vinyl in the same session. Release day landed on the date we set in the first conversation.

The quiet economics of a full room

A full room is never an accident, and it is rarely bought. Paid reach can put your event in front of people; it cannot make the event matter to them.

What fills rooms: a clear idea of who the night is for, a voice in every piece of communication, a poster someone would keep, and respect for the people who came last time. Then paid media has something true to amplify.

Tuning a PA for a village square

Open-air stages forgive nothing. There are no walls to carry the low end, and stone squares throw sibilance around like a skipping stone.

Field notes from this summer’s sunset series: start conservative with the low end, delay the outriggers to the back of the crowd, and walk the square during sound check — not the stage. The mix desk hears one room; the crowd hears six.

Tuning a rig for a square is not about power. It is about even coverage and warm mids, so the people at the back hear the music, not the speaker.
